The village of Melidoni is located 27km east of Rethymno. Melidoni displays some old Venetian buildings blended with modern architecture. During the summer the village comes alive with fairs and various dancing and public events. On Clean Monday, the last day before Lent, there is an ancient ceremony only held in a very few places on Crete. Melidoni is famous for its fantastic cave which became notorious in 1824 during the Revolution when approximately 250 unarmed villagers, among them women and children were suffocated when the entrance was sealed and fires lit by the Turks. Today the village has all amenities for its visitors and the locals.
