The peaceful village of Lourdas (Lourdata) is perched on a hillside on the south coast of Kefalonia island embraced by the pine forest and cypress trees of imposing Mount Ainos. The locals claim that Lourdas took its name from the English word "lord" for the fact that when the island was ruled by Britain, Lourdata became a favorite vacation spot of British aristocracy and lords. The steep hillsides give way to an emerald beach with powdery white sand and beautiful crystal clear waters. The color blend of the crystalline waters and verdant backdrops of Mount Ainos make it an irresistible amalgam of beauty. In proximity to the coast, there is the interesting Monastery of Sissia. Lourdas village has a traditional outline arranged around a quaint central square shaded by a big plane tree with little taverns and cozy cafes dotting the area where you can experience the traditional cuisine of Kefalonia.
Kefalonia is the largest island of the Ionian group, located between Lefkada and Zante. Due to the size of the island Kefalonia never gets too crowded or too noisy, not even in high season and this makes it ideal for family holidays. Famous for the exotic aquamarine color beaches, including Myrtos, Antisamos, Lourdas and Skala, the island has gained popularity as the filming scenery of the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
The Ionian Islands are located on the western side of Greece and are historically and culturally strongly connected to Italy with many evident elements of this. The architecture of the capital towns, including Corfu Town, Zakynthos Town and Argostoli, resembles a lot to the Venetian style as these islands were occupied by the Venetians in the medieval times. Another striking characteristic of Ionian Greece is the lush green nature and the aquamarine beaches with white soft sand. Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Lefkada are the most popular holiday islands. The Ionian islands also embrace an amazing music and dance tradition.
Being among the top 20 tourist destinations worldwide, Greece is synonymous with 3 things: history and ancient civilization, amazing landscapes and top touristic destinations.
