Panormo is a seaside village located 20km west of Rethymno. It is believed to have been built on a spot where a homonymous roman city once existed. Panormo has been an important port of Crete since antiquity. Panormo took its current name from the small church Agios Georgios the Panormos. Near Panormo, the 13th-century fortress Castel Milopotamo was built by a Genoese pirate and around it, the settlement constructed, evolved into today’s village of Panormo. In the middle of the village, the unique in Crete carob-mill stands, which was declared an industrial monument by the Ministry of Culture. The largest 5th-century basilica of Crete, Agia Sophia, is located 200 meters far from the village. Finally, the homonymous beach of the settlement and the coast of Geropotamos are the closest beaches for a refreshing dive.
