Margarites is a highland village of the prefecture of Rethymno located 38 km far from Rethymno, near Ancient Eleftherna. The village is nestled between two canyons of outstanding beauty. The history of Margarites dates back to the Byzantine era. In 1332, the Venetians burned the village, yet during the Cretan Renaissance, the village took a new breath with the building of beautiful mansions, coats of arms, and picturesque churches. Margarites has a great pottery tradition and is famed to be the second most important pottery center in Crete since the area is rich in clay. Worth visiting in Margarites is the Renaissance church of Archangel Michael, the oldest church, Agios Ioannis the Theologian, and the monasteries of Christ the Savior and Agios Gedeon. For history lovers, one of the most important monuments in Margarites is the Late Minoan vaulted tomb dating back to 1350 BC.
