Ierapetra Lassithi is located 35 km south of Agios Nikolaos town and is the largest city of Lassithi. Its inhabitants are mostly engaged in agriculture and tourism. It is surrounded by expanses of orange and lemon groves that add up significantly to its beauty. In Ierapetra, one can visit the remains of a fortress built during the 13th century AD also known as the Castle Gerapetra, Katelli or Koule. Worth visiting is the beautiful Turkish mosque in the old town, as well as the 14th century AD Church of the Metamorphosis of Christ. Ierapetra boasts great tourist facilities such as bars, cafes, and taverns, mostly around the harbor. Boat tours to the island of Gaidouronissi (Donkey Island), or else Chrissi, are organized from Ierapetra.
Located on the eastern side of Crete, Lasithi is the least tourist region of Crete island. Although it includes some popular places such as Elounda, a VIPs and jet-setters resort, Sissi, Sitia and Ierapetra, the rest of the region has maintained its authentic traditional character, away from mass tourism.
