Maiori is a town on the Amalfi coast in the province of Salerno. It has been a popular tourist destination since Roman times, with the widest unbroken stretch of beach on the Amalfi coast. The origins of the city are uncertain, but the original name of the town was Reghinna Maior, as opposed to the nearby town of Minori, Reghinna Minor.
Nowadays the town has a mostly new appearance, very different from the traditional coastlines of other coastal towns.
That doesn't mean that there's no old world element to see here. Worth a trip to Maiori is the church of Santa Maria a Mare-the main church of the area built in an elevated location in the 12th century and remodeled in the 18th century. It is set apart by its crowning, distinctive majoilica dome.
Maiori has the widest beach on the Amalfi Coast: just over a km of sand with a hundred or so swimming facilities and a level coastline entirely separate from all the other beaches on the Amalfi Coast. The unusual shape of the beach was the result of the devastating floods and the consequent landslides in 1954, which devastated the entire old town and formed the "flat" seafront of today. The sandy beach and the number of beachfront hotels and restaurants make Maiori a favorite holiday destination for families and in particular, children.
