Asteri is a beautiful village near the coastal settlements of Sfakaki and Stavromenos situated 13km east of Rethymno. It probably took its name (meaning star in Greek), from a fountain with a carved lion on it that shone like a star. In 1866 the village was totally destroyed by the Turks, thus there are very few Venetian buildings saved from that era. During the German occupation, the Nazis arrested and executed the few men of the village and burnt it. Today there is a monument and worth visiting is the folklore museum. Built in an altitude of 70m and in a part of the hillside of Arsaniotikos torrent, Asteri is an ideal destination since it is really close to the crystalline beaches of north Rethymno. Many of its inhabitants who had abandoned the village, returned and built beautiful mansions.

We had a great time at the villa. There were 6 of us and we all felt perfectly comfortable in the large villa. The pool was amazing! We were also close enough to town where it wasn’t a pain to get anywhere but we were far enough away where we could enjoy some privacy.
The villa is great and very well equipped for holidays (swimming pool, BBQ, pizza oven). The host is super responsive and available.

The property is beautiful, with a great view, a great pool, a nice garden, and everything you need to live comfortably both inside the house and outside. Manager and his team was available to help at all times, with great service both before we arrived and while we were there. They can fix shopping before arrival, cooking, car rental, activities, and the list goes on and on. In addition the owning family lives next door. They are also extremly helpful, flexible and nice. We got some great suggestions and tips from them as well. Moreover they gave us a lot of homemade local treats that were really delicious and made us feel truly welcome. There was actually homemade delights waiting for us when we arrived, and they just kept coming. So all in all, we recommend this property without reservation. You will be in an amazing property, surrounded by people that are eager to make your stay as good as it can be.
This villa is very spacious, the pool is excellent, and there is a great, expansive view of the countryside and the ocean (5 km away). The village is small but has a nice cafe and an excellent restaurant, and there are markets, etc. just down the hill, a 5 min. drive. The villa is well located (you need a car), because it was a base for trips not just to Rethymno but also Chania, Heraklion, and a number of southern beaches. The hosts were responsive to our needs.
