The area of Mournies is located 4 km south of Chania town, close to a vast area of rich verdant nature and plane tree forests. Mournies consist of many smaller villages and it owes its name to the numerous mulberry trees found in the area. It boasts great infrastructure and is linked to Chania with regular buses. The village is dotted with remarkable villas and mansions built by noble families in the 17th century. In the village, you will find several monasteries and beautiful churches worth a visit. Mournies is also the birthplace of the important political figure of Eleftherios Venizelos, organizer, and leader of the Cretan revolution and later on in 1913, president of the newly built Greek State.
