Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, 119 km from Colombo and the administrative capital of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the district capital of Galle District. Galle in the 16th century was the main port on the island and it is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in the whole South and Southeast Asia, displaying the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. The city was extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. The Galle Fort is a world heritage site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. The fort is surrounded on three sides by the ocean and this supplies it with stunning views. Galle is a true gem and a Unesco World Heritage Site. This historic city is a delight to explore on foot, an endlessly exotic old trading port blessed with imposing Dutch-colonial buildings, ancient mosques and churches, grand mansions and museums that exhale a retro atmosphere with an aristocratic scent.
