About the Location

Spain, Mallorca, Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar is one of the last remaining authentic coastal villages in Mallorca, located in the western coastline of the island on a hillside at the edge of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. The most popular attraction of Banyalbufar is its ancient terraced hills descending down to the sea, offering amazing views.

Banyalbufar is far from the touristy, cosmopolitan part of Mallorca; it is rather quiet and traditional, ideal for an authentic experience of the island. This small and traditional village is steeped in history which is also evident in the ancient stone buildings found there. Historical landmarks like the church of La Nativitat de Santa Maria which houses one of the most valuable Baroque instruments in the world, gives a retro flair to the village which has attracted many artists and writers.

The ancient layered terraces that stand to this day, indicate man's ingenuity in creating fertile farmlands out of bare cliffs. Until recently, the custom had it for each generation to add a further layer to the landscape. In the far past, the town of Banyalbufar, whose Arabic name means 'vineyard by the sea', was renowned for its Malvasia wine. Nowadays, the terraces are used to grow vegetables and fruit with tomatoes being the town's most famous crop.

There is much more to see in Banyalbufar, such as the working fishing port of Es Port de Canonge and a number of beautiful coves and beaches. These include Cala Banyalbufar, Es Corral Fals and Son Bunyola. Apart from the charming town center, there is a pretty waterfall and the historic tower called Tour de Ses Animes which was built to provide protection from pirate attacks in the 17th century. The surrounding area also offers excursion options to other villages such as the quaint village of Estellencs which is popular with hikers and bikers.

Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain and located in the Mediterranean. The island boasts world-renowned beaches and coves but is also a perfect destination for golf lovers and lovers of culture, water sports, and entertainment. No wonder Mallorca is a favorite holiday destination for jet-setters from the politics, film and fashion scene.
