Santa Gertrudis is a charming village in the heart of Ibiza Island, about 12km from Ibiza town. This place is steeped in tradition, with a whitewashed church, and its main square around which most of the action takes place, as well as houses of traditional architecture and a rich agricultural landscape to frame the above.
Santa Gertrudis has expanded rapidly the last few years but with great care to its outline. Smart modern villas line the new streets and the old village square has transformed into a beautiful pedestrian-friendly plaza with hip cafés and restaurants.
The village has a strong artistic presence with artists and musicians that have settled here, giving a more bohemian note. It's a small traditional village which has positively been influenced by modernity and art. Art galleries and artisan shops dot the area.
Santa Gertrudis was one of the original places where hippies, artists and musicians gathered in the 1960s. This wave prompted the opening of many galleries and this, in turn, led to a mix of modern yet 'Bohemian' style of living with new villas now lining the streets. The main church of Santa Gertrudis was founded 1797 and as it happens in the majority of the traditional villages, it is the focal point of the town around which people gather to enjoy a coffee to one of its cozy cafes or a bite. The balanced coexistence of old and modern is what makes this place a really special amalgam of culture, architecture and tradition.
