Palaiokastro is a coastal village located 9 km west of the city of Heraklion. It is situated in front of a lengthy pebbled beach which extends to 70m leading to a cove with waters that deepen suddenly. The beach is protected from winds. On the southern end of the beach rises a steep rock where extensive fortifications were built during the Venetian occupation of Crete, accommodating cannons that secured the bay of Heraklion. Ruins of the fortress walls survive until today and are worth a visit.
