Kokkini Hani is located 14 km east of Heraklion. It took its name from a ‘hani’ of 1900 which was a sort of an inn for people and animals. Farmers would make a stop to rest or sleep overnight and have a meal on the way to the Heraklion market. There their horses and donkeys would be cared for and fed. In the early 60s, Kokkini Hani became a pole of touristic attraction. Kokkini Hani developed rapidly primarily because of its wonderful beach but also for its exquisite restaurants and taverns that offered many different cuisines – including local traditional cuisine, freshly-caught seafood, and international specialties. Its proximity to Heraklion and its airport – only 10 minutes away, was another factor. In Kokkini Hani there are many bars and cafes, but the nightlife can’t be compared to that of nearby Hersonissos.
