Ancient Ialyssos of Rhodes used to be one of three earliest city-states on Rhodes Island. Ialyssos is located about 10 to 15 km away from the present town of Rhodes on top of a fortified hill. In the 20th century, under the ruling of Italians, an old Byzantine monastery of the 6th century was rebuilt into a church in order to attract tourists. It comprised four chapels, one dedicated to the Orthodox Christians, one to the Catholics, one to the Knights and one to its old relics. It is worth to drive around the island and explore its magnificent beaches, its impressive sights and picturesque villages. Rhodes predominant element is its medieval architecture and the many interesting monuments scattered around the island.
