About the Location

Spain, Mallorca, Deia

Deia is an idyllic village below Teix Mountain which belongs to the mountain range of Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca. Many foreign artists fell in love with this place and made it their home. Since the 19th century, the town has been attracting artists, musicians, and those in search of a bohemian lifestyle. Deia’s colorful architecture with green-framed windows and ochre-colored houses as well as its unique flair of glorious history has made it today the rich and famous retreat. English poet Robert Graves lead Deia to fame in 1932 when he moved there, establishing its reputation as an “artists’ colony”.

Today the village has maintained its strong artistic character whose presence is evident in the numerous art galleries of the town. Deia has treasured its traditional beauty and charm and despite the fact that almost half of its population are ex-pats, they have been assimilated into the local community with great respect for the traditions and customs. Among the big names that have passed by Deia are Richard Branson, Princess Diana, Bob Geldof, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Deia is an affluent town and proof of this are the beautiful homes of the locals as well as the slightly higher cost of living. But Deia is not all about architecture and fame.

Being a part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, a World Heritage Site, Deia is surrounded by some of Mallorca’s finest landscapes which offer a great outdoor experience to cycling and hiking enthusiasts. From Deià you can also walk down to a small attractive cove, Cala Deià, where nudism is almost established among artists visiting this place.

The main event in town is the Deià International Music Festival which takes place every summer, featuring an array of different music concerts.
