Pals is a medieval town in Catalonia, northern Spain, a few kilometers from the sea in the heart of the Bay of Emporda on the Costa Brava. It is believed to be one of the most charming villages found in Costa Brava due to its well preserved medieval fortress that is per se a journey back in time. Perched on a hilltop, it boasts amazing views.
The historical center has been looked after very well and this is a place that has respected and preserved local traditions and gastronomical habits of the past which are cherished to this day and make Pals a rare gem. Several gastronomic and cultural events are organized throughout the year, but this is not the only reason this place is special. The surroundings are simply breathtaking, with an unspoilt beach, wetlands and verdant rice fields.
The main road into the village leads upwards towards the large tower which consists of the remains of the castle that once stood here. The views from up here are impeccable.
Today only four of the towers stand which are remains of the original fortifications linked by the thick stone ramparts. The church is also at the top of the village and inside you can admire the lovely vaulted Gothic interior. The medieval town is arranged around Placa Major, a picturesque square home to the town hall.
Pals is ideal for a quiet vacation away from the fast pace and buzz of cities like Barcelona.
