About the Location

Italy, Dolomites, San Cassiano

San Cassiano is located in the Dolomites at an altitude of 1,537 at the foot of the peaks of Lavarela and Conturines. It belongs to the tourist district of Alta Badia which was voted "Queen of the Alps" by the prestigious Italian Touring Club.

San Cassiano is a charming little village with a plethora of elegant restaurants – including two Michelin-starred restaurants – attracting an international clientele.

The pedestrianized zone in San Cassiano is particularly popular boasting cafés, bars, restaurants and a wide range of shopping.

But this is not exclusively a winter destination. It also flourishes during the summer, with families and casual walkers enjoying strolls through the sunny Armentarola and Störes meadows, along the “Larch Trail” and the “Meditation Trail”. Those who prefer a longer hike can choose the spectacular trails in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park up to the Lagazuoi Mountain.

The mountains all around San Cassiano are of great geological but also historical interest, since they are testimonies to the tragic history of the First World War all around the Lagazuoi Mountain. At the foot of the Conturines you can join a guided hike to the well-preserved cave dwelling of the prehistoric cave bear ‘ursus ladinicus’. The Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus, in the center of the village, is dedicated to that same cave bear.

Among the most important highlights in San Cassiano, is the Foram toboggan run, the 7.2 km long downhill ski run from Lagazuoi to San Cassiano -Saré and the Armentarola cross-country skiing center with its 25 km runs. Alta Badia skiing area can be accessed via the Piz Sorega cable car. Easier hiking paths include the Pralongià High Plateau, where the heart of the Alta Badia ski resort beats, accessible in some minutes by the Piz Sorega Funicular starting from the village.

In winter, this bride dressed in white offers a lot of thrilling experiences to skiers and sports enthusiasts. Absolutely worth seeing is the tunnel on Mt. Lagazuoi: the entrance can easily be reached from the mountain station of the funicular. It is a mine tunnel blown up in 1917 which has been restored in recent years. The 1 km long tunnel is the most daring gallery system ever realized during the Great War, enabling visitors to see one of the most dramatic battle zones of the Mountain Warfare 1915-1918.

Dolomites are a must-see destination! Ideal for lovers of the outdoors, history, culture, food, and above all breathtaking scenery.  Only two hours by train from Venice, Dolomites is a mixture of Italian and Austrian cultures. During winter there are a variety of cold-weather sports and in the warmer months, there are equally a plethora of outdoor activities.  Mountain bike, road bike, hike, climb, camp, or simply ride a cable car up to the famous passes! Whatever you decide to do Domolites will excite you!

The birthplace of the Roman Empire and Renaissance, Italy, showcases many of the world’s greatest artworks, architectural buildings and over the top gastronomical proposals. This is the country where the word “style” expresses the whole nation. Italy has more Unesco World Heritage cultural sites than any other country; among them are Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera, Michelangelo’s David and Sistine Chapel and da Vinci’s The Last Supper.
