Amanzoe Resort in Porto Heli Greece, ancient Greek epic. The helicopter flight from Athens to Amanzoe creates a swift segue into an altogether wilder Greece, a place of pure nature, where time stands still. Scattered with Unesco ruins, the undiscovered Peloponnese has been at the heart of Greek culture for milennia, and it is there that Amanzoe has made its hilltop home, a modern-day Acropolis from which 360-degree views encompass olive groves, Aegean blue, and little else. Designed to meld with the land, suites and villas with pools belie a remarkable sense of space, opening to fragnant garden or the beach, where speedboats lie waiting to zip between secret coves and the nearby islands of Spetses and Hydra.
From Nama’s Japanese cuisine to the Restaurant’s Mediterranean fare, Amanzoe places the focus on simple flavours, expertly prepared. Daily deliveries of local bass, bream, grouper and crustacean, as well as locally reared lamb, pork and rabbit, make Amanzoe a champion of produce that is local and seasonal – all served in the airy Restaurant, with its deep-blue sea views, by the pool, at the informal Beach Club, or surrounded by candles in private.
The holistic healings of Hippocrates are the inspiration for Amanzoe’s light-filled 2,850-square-metre Spa, combining diet, gymnastics, exercise, massage and sea bathing with modern natural products and treatments. A gym is also available, and studios host yoga and Pilates sessions.
The private beach and beach club are set below Amanzoe on a sheltered bay. Complimentary transfers take guests down to the Aegean, where non-motorised watersports can be enjoyed. The serene beach club is home to four swimming pools and overnight Cabanas, as well as a casual eatery and two-room spa.
Amanzoe’s luxury Villas are cool, spacious abodes surrounded by olive groves. Overlooking the Aegean Sea, each of the one-to-nine-bedroom Greek Villas features an open terrace with sand-coloured marble floors, traditional dry stone-clad walls and concrete columns and cornices. A chef and a host serves each one.
