Khao Lak is located on the gorgeous Andaman coast is just an hour’s drive north of Phuket Island and is considered one of Thailand's most peaceful resort destinations. The wider area includes three national parks and a stunning stretch of coastline with beaches that extend for miles. Khao Lak is a rare oasis for relaxation as well as an excellent combination of tropical forest and powdery white sand beaches. The name Khao Lak translates as Lak Mountain. Lak mountain is one of the main peaks in the hilly small mountainous region in Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. Khao Lak includes a series of villages, which are mainly employed with tourism, especially in the Takua Pa District and in the Thai Mueang District of Phang Nga Province, Thailand. Khao Lak extends to 20 km and is dotted with coastal resorts in Phang Nga Province on the Andaman Sea beaches of Southern Thailand. Khao Lak region was the hardest-hit area in Thailand by the 2004 tsunami with over 4,000 fatalities but made an impressive recovery. Unlike Phuket which is more couple-oriented, the target group of many resorts in Khao Lak are mainly families who are looking for a peaceful holiday.
