Chiang Rai is a provincial town in northern Thailand, in the mountainous province of the homonymous area. The city is near the borders of Laos and Myanmar. Compared to its sister town Chiang Mai, it gives out a more relaxed and down-to-earth feeling but rich in historical and cultural attractions. Founded in 1262 as the capital of the Mengrai Dynasty, after Chiang Saen, today the city retains a strong Lanna identity, mostly through its impressive temples, art, language, tastes and music. Unlike Chiang Mai, the city offers limited options when it comes to nightlife, entertainment and shopping, and most of these are concentrated in the area around the Clock Tower.
