Hoedspruit is primarily an agricultural town situated a few minutes away from the Kruger National Park and is surrounded by a game-rich country that makes it an easy stopover. As a result, what just started off as a few stores, a bank and a little turret that acted as a station house, has developed into what is now being advertised as the premier eco-tourism destination because of its association with some of the best 'Big 5' sightings in South Africa.
Hoedspruit maintains a great deal of its rural beauty, considering the number of scheduled airlines coming into the air force base just outside the city, which is now conveniently used for commercial aircraft. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center is a non-profit organization where you can visit and it is devoted to the protection of all endangered species and one of the region's experts in the breeding and study of endangered species. Breeding projects include cheetahs, black-footed cats, African wild dogs, and wild cats, and blue cranes.
