Savai’i is easily accessible by a ferry from Mulifanua Wharf in western Upolu within just 90 minutes. Savai’i is separated from Upolu to the east by the Apolima Strait and it is about 80 km long and 40 km across at its widest point. The island is extremely mountainous at 1,858 meters with Mount Silisili, being its highest point. A string of volcanic craters extends from the east coast at Tuasivi to Samoa’s westernmost point at Cape Mulinu‘u, creating amazing color contrasts.
On Savai'i, you’ll get a true insight into the traditional Samoan way of life. A great way to experience the culture and the Savaiian sense of community is by attending a church service that will give you more insight into the locals’ way of life.
No doubt Savai'i ticks all the boxes for a dreamy exotic holiday such as the white sandy, palm-fringed beaches, and turquoise lagoons. It is less developed than neighboring Upolu, and its cultural life is considered more traditional. The chief settlement is Tuasivi, on the eastern coast. The island’s products include coconuts, copra, bananas, cacao, and taro.
Samoa island nation is located in the South Pacific Ocean, roughly situated midway between Hawaii and New Zealand and is part of Polynesia. It is created by volcanic explosions though today none of the volcanoes are currently active, yet small earthquakes often rock the island. Samoa is a beautiful paradox in that despite its intense natural beauty with its shimmering seas, dense jungles and fairyland waterfalls it has managed to maintain a humble profile, devoid of mega-resorts and loud attractions. Its population is around 195,000 but a lot of Samoans live outside the country, particularly in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. The two main islands of Samoa complex are Upolu and Savaii. The capital is Apia, and the international airport is found on Upolu.
