About the Location

Peru, Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is located in the Andes Mountains between Peru and Bolivia, and it is one of South America's biggest lakes and the world's highest navigable body of water. It is said to be the Incas' birthplace and is home to various ruins. Its waters are well-known for being calm and brightly reflective. Titicaca National Reserve surrounds it, protecting endangered marine species such as giant frogs.

When taking a boat through the waters of Lake Titicaca, one gets a feeling of vastness, of the endless. The lake is so large that it seems like you're in the middle of a bay, with islands where customs and rituals have been untouched for hundreds of years. A tour of the lake should include the Uros Islands, which are completely made of reeds; Taquile, where weavers have gained worldwide renown; and Amantani, where you can get away from it all and just relax. The sunrise and sunset are indescribable here, and the night sky is packed with stars that look so close that you hope you may be able to touch them.

Peru is a South American country known for its Amazon rainforest and Machu Picchu, a historic Incan city high in the Andes mountains. The area around Machu Picchu, including the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail, and the historic city of Cusco, is densely packed with archaeological sites. Visitors rush to the majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, but this celebrated location is just a blip in Peruvian settlement's 5000-year history. Explore the sandy remains of Chan Chan, the Americas' biggest pre-Columbian ruins.

Ingredients ranging from highland tubers to tropical jungle fruits have led to a diverse cuisine of Spanish, indigenous, African, and Asian elements. The reality is that fusion occurred here long before it was accompanied by airs and graces. Investigate the bounty of food markets. On the street corners, try grilled beef skewers and splurge on sublime Peruvian nouvelle cuisine. Take this large area in little bits and don't rush. Delays occur. Festivals will consume you for days. And you'll know that the fun in Peru is normally in getting there.
