Sainte-Marie island is located a few kilometers from the East coast of Madagascar and is famous for its exceptional lagoon and paradisiacal beaches. The tropical climate has carpeted the island with lush vegetation whose species are mainly endemic. On the east coast, traditional pirogue boats dot Baie d’Ampanihy’s lagoon. The island includes some interesting spots and events, such as the Cimetiere des Pirates wherefrom the cemetery overlooks the beautiful Baie des Forbans. If you happen to be on the island in the first weeks of July do not miss the Whale Festival, which is a huge event with a big parade and many games. Fanilo Albrand Lighthouse is another reason why Saint-Marie island is worth visiting.
