San Severino Marche is a municipality in the Province of Macerata of the Italian region Marche, located about 50 kilometers southwest of Ancona and about 25 kilometers southwest of Macerata.
San Severino is set against the Montenero hill, in the Potenza valley. The artistic heritage of San Severino Marche is strongly linked to the period of maximum autonomy of the municipality and to the lordship of the Smeducci; this epoch reflects on the numerous Gothic churches scattered in the city and wider territory, and the works left by the local pictorial school. There are two nucleuses in San Severino; the ancient Castle on the top of the Montenero, and the Borgo developed since the sec. XIII along the slope. The heart of the city beats in the beautiful Piazza del Popolo, with its characteristic oval layout. On the southern side of the square stands the eighteenth-century Palazzo Comunale, while on the opposite side the rococo facade of the Church of San Giuseppe is impressive. Other interesting buildings include Palazzo Servanzi Collio, in terracotta and ashlar, and the sixteenth-century Palazzo dei Governatori, with the Clock Tower.
The most important buildings of religious character are the Church of San Domenico, renovated in 1664, the Church of the Misericordia, which includes a painting by Pomarancio and fragments of frescoes by Lorenzo Salimbeni, the Church of Sant’Agostino, along with the New Cathedral and the Old Cathedral, the latest involving a fourteenth-century façade.
For history lovers The "Giuseppe Moretti" Archaeological Museum is located in the adjacent episcopal rooms. One of the most important attractions here is the Civic Art Gallery, housed in Palazzo Tacchi Venturi with mostly local school paintings.
Typical products of San Severino include sausages, cheeses and the wine "Terreni di San Severino". The most important events taking place here are: The San Severino Blues Festival (July-August), the Salimbeni Prize for History and the Criticism of Art and the Palio dei Castelli.
