Bendega Estate lies off a grassy lane among a scattering of other private villas and the luxuriant rice terraces that define the Balinese countryside. The sound of the waves can be heard from the immaculate, though modestly sized garden and a walk westwards along the beach (good for surfing and walking but currents make it unsuited for swimming) will bring you to a sea temple and the glorious museum-like Hotel Tugu. Down the road from the villas are some village homes and small grocery shops selling the basics, but for more sophisticated pleasures, guests can avail themselves of the villa’s car and driver and head into Seminyak.
Bendega is Balinese for fisherman, a fitting name for this villa, which sits in a sea of rice terraces on the perimeter of the small traditional fishing village of Nelayan in Bali’s popular Canggu district. A five-minute walk down a quiet road will bring you to the stunning black-sands of Pantai Nelayan (a wonderful beach for walking and surfing but not safe for swimming), and a short stroll along the sands from here is the Tugu Hotel, an atmospheric boutique hotel-museum stacked with antiques and a ‘must visit’ during your stay. Many interesting cafés, bars, and restaurants are springing up throughout this part of Canggu – several within easy walking distance of the villa.
Canggu Beach is a coastal village of Bali located between Seminyak and Tanah Lot. People have migrated there to escape the congestion of Kuta and Seminyak. Its coastline comprises diverse black-sand beaches that are popular with surfers from around the world. Canggu is split into three major areas; Batu Bolong, Berawa, and Pererenan. The countryside of Canggu Beach features verdant rice fields and is a residential area of choice among many Bali expatriates where also plenty of beautiful villas have been established. As Bali’s expatriate neighborhood and surfing area, Canggu has among the island’s latest surf camps, bar and restaurant openings, and shops catering to an international clientele. If you are into culture do not miss Pura Tanah Lot Temple which is a famous religious site located on top of a rock formation where Balinese people worship the Bali Sea Gods.
You can also visit the main sights of Bali which are not far from this coastal area. Tanah Lot is the island's most iconic temple positioned on top of a huge rock, rooted in the sea. Uluwatu is among Bali's most important sea temples where from visitors can admire the most picturesque sunsets. Besakih Temples are the largest of all the Balinese temples with eighteen separate sanctuaries.
