REVIEW SCORE

There is a place at the southernmost tip of Europe – dreamlike, magical, and secret – cradled by idyllic vineyards, olive and fruit orchards and only a few minutes from the bright blue Aegean Sea. The Kinsterna, an impressive mansion and sprawling estate dating to the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian eras, has been meticulously restored and returned to its former glory with an air of discreet luxury.

show more details

With a view of the medieval fortress town of Monemvasia, which is listed among the ten most popular monuments in Greece (Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards 2018), the Byzantine-era Kinsterna mansion has been restored with the utmost respect for its long history and now is an entire settlement unto itself, with a central manor house, adjacent out-buildings, and nearby dwellings. At the same time, the owners have also set out to restore the estate’s rich natural environment, emphasizing various traditional agricultural activities such as harvesting grapes, producing olive oil, distilling tsipouro, and making soap –with the aim of making the estate as autonomous and self-sustaining as possible. Today, the Kinsterna produces its own wine, extra-virgin olive oil and table olives, tsipouro (traditional Greek spirits), bread, marmalade and other fruit preserves, soap, and much more. The fruit-bearing trees and fertile vegetable gardens, the beds of aromatic herbs and flowers, and the springs with their fresh, flowing waters all contribute to this ethos and model of sustainability.

In addition to its exciting history as a centuries-old fortified manor, today the Kinsterna is a year-round pole of attraction as a comprehensive vacation experience. Explore the mansion; stroll the pathways among the gardens, and enjoy the vivid colors and fragrant smells of the decorative and aromatic plants, herbs, and flowers (over 250 kinds); taste the fruit and other products from our vegetable gardens and orchards; visit our wine cellar; relax in the spa with locally inspired treatments, and try local specialties of Greek cuisine in a unique natural setting. A visit to Kinsterna will undoubtedly remain etched in your memory for years to come. And you will certainly return.

Each and every room is different and unique, with individualized layout, design, styling, and decoration. All the rooms and suites, however, share certain common characteristics, such as traditional hand-made embroideries on the walls, custom headboards and lamps, impressive wooden ceilings covered with herringbone-patterned reeds, luxurious marble baths, traditional wooden doors and shutters, new and antique design objects, top-quality linens and personal-care bath products. At the same time, all rooms come equipped with such modern comforts as flat-screen TV, wireless internet service, king or queen-size beds, and a choice of top-of-the-line pillows from Cocomat.

You are sure to appreciate your stay in the Kinsterna Suites, which offer an amazing view of the Aegean Sea and the estate’s private vineyards, while most of the suites have balconies. One of these suites is particularly interesting, thanks to its finely carved old fireplace and a balcony built above the old wine press, where the grapes were most likely trodden for wine, and must be gathered for other uses. The mansion’s defensive cannon was also positioned here (Kinsterna Suite 39).

These suites are also impressive on other levels, with their king-size beds, fireplaces, and separate sitting rooms or combination living-and-dining areas.

About the Location

Greece, Peloponnese, Lakonia

Monemvasia is located in Laconia, Greece, a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The town walls and many Byzantine churches are relics from the medieval period. The seat of the municipality is the town Molaoi. The town's name derives from two Greek words, "mone" and "emvasia", meaning "single entrance". Its Italian form, Malvasia, gave its name to Malmsey wine. Monemvasia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock.

Monemvasia is among the most impressive places in Greece, found on the southeastern side of Peloponnese. Monemvasia’s original position used to be on the backside of a sea rock in the Medieval times. This rock is not visible from the mainland and it protected the locals from enemy attacks. The only way to reach Monemvasia was by boat and this is how the name derived, meaning single passage. The new town of Monemvasia has been constructed in the mainland, opposite the rock. Monemvasia is famous for its castle; a walk around the Castle Town is a travel to the past, while the sea view from the castle top is hard to put into words.

Lakonia lies in the southern part of the Peloponnese to the south of Arkadia and to the east of Messinia. It covers an area blessed by a generous nature with diverse beauty and comprises many natural benchmarks; in the western part rises Mt. Taigetos the highest peak of the Peloponnese at 2,407m, in the eastern part Mt. Parnon. Between the two mountains flows the river Evrotas, leaving at its passing fertile the valley of Sparta city and the plain of Elos (mentioned by Homer) mouthing in the Gulf of Lakonia.

Legendary Peloponnese is the land of ancient fights and myths. From here Paris of Troy took Helen and the Argonauts set sail in search of the Golden Fleece.  Mycenaean palaces, Byzantine cities, and Venetian fortresses, all combined with the gorgeous landscape of the mountains and sea to make them over the top Peloponnese.  Visit its snowcapped mountains, gorges, sandy beaches, and azure waters and feel the energy deriving from the place. Peloponnese is an ideal destination for summer and winter holidays as well.

Being among the top 20 tourist destinations worldwide, Greece is synonymous with 3 things: history and ancient civilization, amazing landscapes and top touristic destinations. Greece is so wealthy in culture and beauty that it never seems to be completely explored. Holidays in Greece is the ultimate experience all year round. It offers a great pallet of experiences; the warm sun, the crystal clear beaches, the dramatic nature, the rich culture and the renowned hospitality along with the unique culinary experience of the Mediterranean diet.
