Xylokastro is situated in the south side of the Korinthian Gulf and has been an inspiration to many Greek poets and the scenery of some Greek films. It is one of the oldest tourist resorts of Greece found in the spot of an ancient settlement-port Aristonaftes, ruins of which are still traced undersea. Its name means ‘wooden castle’ in Greek and it refers to barracks back in the Frankish rule era in 1260. The beaches of the region have been awarded the white flag for the crystal waters. The region is famous for its breathtaking views over the Korinthian Gulf and its unique pine forest next to Xylokastro, stretching along the coast. Xylokastro can serve as a base for exploring nearby places such as Trikala Korinthias and Doxa Lake, Ziria mountain, Stymfalia lake, Ancient Corinth, Epidaurus, Mycenae and picturesque Nafplio.
