An international cosmopolitan seaside resort, attracting thousands of visitors every year. The lake, the town’s jewel, is known for its many legends, according to one of which, Athena and Artemis are bathing in its waters. The lake becomes one with the sea through a narrow canal and is surrounded by red rock formations and lush vegetation. Agios Nikolaos centers on Lake Voulismeni, a small, circular lake ringed by steep rocky cliffs to one side and open-air cafés and seafood restaurants to the other. It is hardly ever referred to by name and is usually only called "the lake" on signs, maps, and in general conversation. Agios Nikolaos is the perfect base to explore the surrounding towns and villages, including the upmarket small resort of Elounda or a little further north along the bay, the busy village of Plaka, a place that is bucking the trend of the economic slowdown having been discovered by many tourists following the success of Victoria Hislop’s bestselling book The Island and its subsequent dramatization made for Greek television. The island in question is Spinalonga, the old Venetian fortress and former leper colony lying just a stone’s throw offshore of Plaka and can be reached by boat from here, or indeed from Elounda or Agios Nikolaos itself.
Located on the eastern side of Crete, Lasithi is the least tourist region of Crete island. Although it includes some popular places such as Elounda, a VIPs and jet-setters resort, Sissi, Sitia and Ierapetra, the rest of the region has maintained its authentic traditional character, away from mass tourism. A Perfect Holiday Haven. What a beautiful place to land for our holiday with friends! The villa was everything it promised and more. With five adults and four kids in our group, everyone was able to find their own refuge—whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying quiet corners of the house, cooking together in the well-equipped kitchen, or gathering around the BBQ for long, shared meals.
Our host, Dimitris, was truly wonderful. He welcomed us with warmth and generosity, and even invited us to his family’s small restaurant in a mountain village. Sharing that meal, lovingly prepared by him, his wife, and their children, was a highlight of our trip—authentic, delicious, and filled with heart.
This villa gave us the perfect balance of relaxation, connection, and unforgettable experiences. We would happily return and can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable holiday in Crete!
Reserved this villa for my 40th Birthday celebrations for myself and a group of friends and family in one of my favourite places - agios nikolas in crete. Dimitris the owner couldn’t have been more helpful in communication before the trip and arranged to cater for us for two bbq nights during our stay which were fantastic - he is an amazing cook! The villa was absolutely stunning with plenty of space, beautiful grounds and a view to die for. A car is probably needed, however dimitris had a contact for taxis which were very easy to arrange. The villa is about a 5 min drive down to the town and some fantastic beach’s as well as all that the Mirabello bay area has to offer. Thanks again for making us feel so welcome Dimitris we will be back soon!
Very nice house with a swimming pool on the heights of Agios Nikolaos, large, surrounded by beautiful vegetation. The friendly owner Dimitri is always there for good advice. The view of the city and the sea, especially at night, is beautiful.
The house is beautiful and exactly as described, with a stunning sea view from the hills. The host was an excellent host—extremely responsive and dedicated. The location is also great, with easy access to the sandy beaches and restaurants of Agios Nikolaos. We highly recommend it!
The villa had everything our group of 8 could’ve hoped for and more! Our host Dimitris saw to it that our every need was catered for upon arrival, including an amazing selection of goodies, food and beverages to get us going! BBQ night was just simply perfect and the portions were very generous indeed - the varied menu catered for all, it even managed to satisfy the insatiable appetite of one particularly greedy member of our party (he knows who he is!!) Thank you for looking after us Dimitris, we will be back, whether you want us or not!!
