Naxos Town or Chora is the capital and main harbor of the island of Naxos on the west coast of the island, considered to be one of the most beautiful villages of all Cycladic islands. Its fine architecture combines Venetian and Cycladic elements. Naxos Town has kept an authentic and strong traditional character. On the town’s top, stands an impressive Venetian castle constructed in 1207 which is the trademark of the island. Its shape is pentagonal with beautiful buildings, mansions, monuments and churches framing it on the paved streets. This charming place has a medieval atmosphere. The castle area hosts the Archaeological Museum of Naxos in an old Jesuit Commercial school. In the northern part of the capital, a long paved road leads to the islet of Palatia (Palaces) where stands the unfinished Temple of Apollo and the trademark of the island, the famous Portara (Big Door) which is the gate of the temple. The closest capital to the beach is that of Saint George, a long golden sandy beach lined with restaurants and cafes and a well-known spot for windsurfing.
