REVIEW SCORE

Nestled in the exclusive and wonderfully private area of Le Crêt, Chalet Machapuchare Val d’Isère commands uninterrupted views of the entire valley, from the rocky cliffs above La Daille across pretty Val d'Isère to the glaciers and snowcapped peaks beyond. The pistes, shops, and nightlife are just a three-minute chauffeured minibus drive away.

Completed in 2018, the chalet sleeps 14-15 guests in 7 en-suite bedrooms plus an additional children's bunk room. The attention to detail throughout the chalet is one of its highlights, with a focus on natural materials such as wood, stone, wool, metal, and leather. Many of the pieces have been handcrafted by the owner or are repurposed from traditional local objects, such as a coffee table fashioned from an old-fashioned cider press, or light fittings made from wooden Beaufort cheese casings.

The focal point of the chalet is its dramatic double-height sitting room, with enormous windows affording panoramas of the surrounding peaks. The cleverly designed space comprises ample seating on large comfortable sofas, a generous dining area, a well-stocked bar, reading and games corners on the mezzanine and wraparound balconies giving access to the hot tub, which is blessed with arguably the best views in the valley.

The chalet's other spa facilities include a stunning indoor swimming pool with a waterfall and counter-current system, a hammam, a massage area, and a well-equipped gym. Next door is the sound-proofed cinema room with tiered seating, completing the round-up of superb facilities that make Machapuchare an exceptional luxury retreat in Val d'Isère.

France, French Alps, Val-d'Isère

Val d’Isère is a ski resort in the French Alps, near the Italian border, part of the Espace Killy ski area and a neighbor of Tignes. Ski lifts can take you to sites like the steep Face de Bellevarde, a black-rated piste, and the Grande Motte glacier, known for summer ski runs. The Col De l’Iseran Mountain gains popularity in the summer as a cycle route. In town, bars and restaurants cluster around Avenue Olympique.

Val d'Isere, in the Savoie area of France, a farm community in the far past, turned into a colorful winter sports retreat. It is the best-known part of Espace Killy. The huge skiing domain shares itself with Tignes. The area took its name Olympic hero Jean-Claude Killy, who grew up in Val d'Isere. The charming village floods with visitors every winter. Espace Killy has 300 kilometers of maintained slopes cut through vast snowfields that stretch to the horizon. Ninety-nine lifts have a capacity of moving more than 135,000 skiers an hour, uphill. Much of the terrain is ideal for cruisers, but there are many opportunities for snowboarders and powder skiers to show their stuff.
