About the Location

France, French Alps, Hautes-Alpes

Serre Chevalier is a major ski resort in southeastern France, in the Hautes-Alpes department of the Alps, near the Parc National des Ecrins. Its skiing area comprises ample 250 km of slopes and the fact that it boasts 300 days of sunshine annually adds to its popularity. In Serre Chevalier, 80 km of the slopes are covered by snow cannons to supplement natural snowfall. Serre Chevalier is a property of Compagnie des Alpes and is also where World Cup champion ski racer Luc Alphand was born and still lives in the valley below the resort.

Serre Chevalier is made up of four different base areas, including Briancon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Le Monêtier-Les-Bains. Serre Chevalier one of the most popular destinations in the southern part of the French Alps.

The fact that the Chevalier Valley opens out towards the south ensures a great vista for the skiers at an altitude between about 1200m and 2800m. A combination of the Alpine and Mediterranean climates ensures perfect skiing conditions in the ski area.

There really is something for everyone, with several individual ski stations catering for a wide range of needs and skier levels. The ski areas and stations of Chantemerle (St. Chaffrey), Villeneuve (La Salle Les Alpes) and Le Monêtier Les Bains are all linked by shuttle bus services throughout the day, which is free for anyone with a guest pass or ski pass to use.

An expansive south-facing valley between the Col du Lautaret and Briançon comprises 13 villages ranging from the ultra-modern to the more traditional. In the summer Serre Chevalier doesn’t cease to attract visitors since it transforms into an area dedicated to kayaking, walking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, rock climbing, sledding and paragliding offering amazing views and scenery.
