San Pedro is a town on the southern part of the island of Ambergris Caye in Belize, in Central America. It is the second-largest town in the Belize District. In the past (until 1984) it used to be a fishing village. The town is said to be the inspiration for the song "La Isla Bonita", sang by Madonna. San Pedro's inhabitants originally came from Mexico. Most speak both Spanish and English fluently. Due to the influence of English based Kriol, most San Pedranos speak an intermediate form between English and Spanish known as "Kitchen Spanish" or “Spanglish”. San Pedro is home to the world’s 2nd largest reef system, the Belize Barrier Reef, and is globally known for some of the best dive sites in the world, the famous Blue Hole, a giant sinkhole located off the coast of Ambergris Caye.
